India's flag-carrier has unveiled a major rebrand that includes contemporary Business Class, First Class and Premium Economy cabins.
The Tata Group - which purchased the airline in January 2022 - has also updated Air India's colours, in line with its transformation initiative. Recently, Air India committed to a substantial purchase of 470 aircraft to modernise its fleet.
Both Business Class and First Class cabins will be all-suite - complete with sliding privacy doors.
Business Class:
Air India has introduced a bright and airy Business Class cabin. The suites are configured in a 1-2-1 layout - complete with all the modern coveniences of a modern Business Class offering - including full lie-flat seat, wireless charging, ottoman and sizeable touchscreen monitor. All have direct access to the aisle. The suites feature a grey & aubergine colour scheme - accentuated with rose gold and silver accents.
First Class:
Same seat as Business Class but with a bigger screen. It will come in a deep red hue. Also there is a bigger-than-Business-Class ottoman.
There is only one row of suites in First Class - set in a 1-2-1 configuration.
Premium Economy:
Passengers will enjoy modern seating in a 2-4-2 configuration with increased legroom. All future long-haul Air India aircraft will feature a Premium Economy cabin.
"Signifies limitless possibilities" - that's how Tata - the owner of Air India - Chairman N Chandrasekaran describes the airline's new logo.
“Our transformative new brand reflects an ambition to make Air India a world-class airline serving guests from around the globe, and that represents a new India proudly on the global stage." says Campbell Wilson, Air India CEO.
The newly unveiled livery includes a fresh font and a fin motif in shades of red, gold, and purple, influenced by the traditional Indian window-frame that the carrier has historically employed. The airline refers to the logo as the 'Vista,' symbolising "limitless possibilities, progressiveness, and a brave and optimistic vision of the future."
This year, Air India plans to buy and lease 20 long-haul planes as part of its fleet overhaul and will begin a refurbishment program for 43 older aircraft starting next year. Another Tata airline - Vistara - will merge with Air India by March 2024.
From later this year, Air India will receive new aircraft starting with A350-900s that were originally commissioned by Russian carrier Aeroflot. They will not - however - feature the cabins unveiled by Air India. These will only appear on the new A350-900s - to be delivered in 2024 and also on the airline's existing Boeing 777 and 787s that will be retrofitted. The work is scheduled to start on these in mid-2024 and take around 30 months.
