Air New Zealand has announced its selection of BETA Technologies' ALIA, a next-generation electric aircraft, for its Mission Next Gen Aircraft program. The airline aims to introduce a commercial demonstrator by 2026, with the ALIA expected to join its fleet that year. This move marks Air New Zealand's first step in transitioning to lower-emission aircraft.
The ALIA, a battery-powered all-electric plane, is part of a broader effort by Air New Zealand to decarbonize aviation. The airline has collaborated with 30 organizations over an 18-month period, ultimately choosing four partners to help achieve its vision of using next-generation aircraft for commercial flights by 2026. The ALIA is the program's first commercial order.
In a partnership with New Zealand Post, Air New Zealand plans to initially deploy the ALIA for cargo services. The airline is currently selecting a route through an expression of interest process involving various airports across Aotearoa (New Zealand).
Key details about the ALIA and Air New Zealand's plans include:
- The aircraft will be the conventional take-off and landing (CTOL) version of the ALIA.
- Air New Zealand has ordered one aircraft, with options for two more and rights for an additional 20.
- The ALIA has achieved a 480km flight in testing. Air New Zealand's initial routes are expected to be around 150km.
- The flights are likely to be at altitudes between 1500 to 3000 meters.
- The ALIA is three tonnes, over 12 meters in length, and can fly at speeds up to 270km/h.
- Battery charging time is anticipated to be 40-60 minutes.
- The aircraft will undergo extensive testing and certification by the New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority to ensure safety before entering service.
