Production of the Overture - dubbed the Son of Concorde - is due to start in 2024 but will only begin carrying passengers towards the end of the decade. The jet will cruise at Mach 1.7 over water and just under Mach 1 over land - cutting the time from New York to London - for instance - from six & a half to just three & a half hours.
Overture - designed by Boom Supersonic and built in Colorado - will seat between 65 to 80 passengers. Supersonic Boom CEO and founder Blake Scholl said: "Aviation has not seen a giant leap in decades. Overture is revolutionary in its design, and it will fundamentally change how we think about distance," and followed that " with more than 600 routes across the globe, Overture will make the world dramatically more accessible for tens of millions of passengers."
Overture will have four engines will fly at supersonic speeds of up to 2,100 kilometres per hour - twice as fast as current commercial planes. The plane has also been developed to be more environmentally friendly, flying on 100 percent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and achieving net zero carbon emissions.
"Sustainability is woven into all aspects of Overture, from design and production to flight and end-of-life recycling," says Boom Supersonic.
Many are referring to Overture as the 'son of Concorde' – a legendary supersonic aircraft that was introduced in 1969 and retired in 2003.
AA has paid a non-refundable deposit for 20 Overture aircraft and has taken an option on another 40.
