American Airlines unveils its Flagship Suite – spelling the end of First Class

American Airlines has announced that its "Flagship Suite’ will be introduced in 2024 - on arrival of its new Airbus A321XLR and Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner fleets. There will also a new Premium Economy cabin. Additionally, all existing long-haul Boeing 777-300ERs will receive a luxurious interior makeover and premium seating will expand by more than 45 per cent - this by 2026.

American Airlines is one of the few airlines in the US that boasts First Class – Flagship First – along with its Flagship Business. With the introduction of Flagship Suites, First Class will be phased out and Business Class passengers will enjoy the enhanced offering.

The Boeing 787-9’s 51 Flagship Suites will be arranged in a reverse herringbone 1-2-1 configuration providing customers with a private premium experience with direct aisle access. Features include a lounge seat converting to a fully-flat bed, extendable dining and work surfaces, well-conceived storage areas, a large IFE screen and a full-height privacy door. Centre seats will also benefit from a sliding privacy divider for solo travellers.

The airline will introduce 32 new Premium Economy seats, creating more privacy for passengers from headrest wings and double in-seat storage space for passenger comfort and convenience.

The new Airbus A321XLR’s narrowbody fleet will offer 20 Flagship Suites in a 1-1 formation with central aisle access, providing spacious interiors and the same excellent levels of privacy as the 787s from full-height sliding doors. Premium Economy will be arranged in a 2-2 formation with 12 seats, similar in appearance to a domestic First Class cabin set-up.

American Airlines plans to retrofit its fleet of Boeing 777-300ERs with refreshed interiors that will include 70 of the new Flagship Suites and 44 Premium Economy seats. The existing Airbus A321Ts will be revamped to align with the rest of the A321 fleet. These upgrades are not expected to complete until late 2025 to early 2026 but provide a tempting prospect for increased premium capacity and an enhanced customer experience on American Airlines’ long-haul international flights.
