Austrian Airlines is recruiting Flying Chefs — a top-end service in Business Class cabins - whose return signals the airline's intent to invest in the premium soft product.
The Vienna-based airline's in-flight catering and flying chef service have long since been revered for their high quality and for providing that extra special touch to premium cabins on long-haul flights out of Vienna.
The Lufthansa Group member uses gourmet entertainment company DO & CO for its in-flight catering. The new chefs will likely be employees of the catering company and could be seen in the skies as early as summer 2023.
In-flight chefs are fully trained professionals with a portfolio of upscale gastronomy, often experienced in some of the world's finest restaurants.
Although meals are primarily prepared on the ground, in-flight chefs ensure each dish is plated and garnished to the highest possible standard and personalised according to an individual's dietary requirements.
If the pre-pandemic service is anything to go by, customers in Business Class will receive a complete hospitality experience from the Flying Chefs, who will explain the menu and provide passengers with curated drink recommendations. The chefs are also on hand to provide culinary advice to flight attendants.
Austrian Airlines provides an ever-changing menu created by Tastefully Austrian, using high-quality, seasonal and regional ingredients. As well as a fine selection of wines and Champagnes to compliment the meal service, other culinary specialities include an impressive coffee selection, including Austrian specialities, Einspänner — an espresso served in a glass and prepared with whipped cream, and Wiener Melange — a classic Austrian espresso coffee, prepared with steamed milk and topped with foam.
