Japan Airlines (JAL) has extended its meal skip option on all international routes for all passenger classes as the airline strives towards sustainable flights and moves closer towards achieving zero CO2 emissions by 2050.
The airline’s sustainability initiative was launched in November 2020 on its Bangkok route. It was further expanded to include Southeast Asia and East Asian destinations on overnight flights when passengers were more likely to be resting.
The JAL Ethical Choice Meal Skip Option encourages passengers who do not need in-flight catering to cancel the service at least 25 hours before flight departure, reducing food waste and allowing passengers additional rest periods without disruption of meal service.
Customers can select this option by visiting the JAL website and following the ‘Service Selection’ tab pathway. Additionally, for every meal cancelled, JAL will donate to the ‘Table For Two Program’ — a global non-profit social contribution program, which started in Japan, in which member donations go towards school meal programmes for children suffering hunger in developing countries.
Business Class customers requiring in-flight meals can now take advantage of the advanced reservation Express Meal service — providing quick and delicious single-tray meals for passenger convenience.
New menu items have been added to the advanced reservation service in addition to existing Japanese and Western dishes, with menu options updated every three months, including plant-based ingredients and sustainable produce.
The airline has also launched a new offering for its Premium Economy cabin. "RED à table" - special dishes are created by three chefs of Vietnamese, Italian, and Japanese cuisines. Available now on all medium and long-haul international flights, the new menus feature Future 50 Foods which Unilever and WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) advocate sustainable foodstuffs in terms of safety and nutritional value!
