Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines & SWISS - internet upgrade on short & medium-haul routes

The Lufthansa Group is enhancing its short and medium-haul fleets with high-speed internet across three of its airlines this year. The expansion includes equipping all Airbus A220/320 family aircraft (A220, A319, A320ceo, A320neo, A321ceo, A321neo) operated by Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, and now SWISS, totalling over 150 aircraft.

System installation across these airlines will commence in the fourth quarter of 2024 and is expected to complete within two years.

Following Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, and Eurowings, SWISS is set to offer in-flight internet to its passengers on short- and medium-haul flights. Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, and Eurowings have been providing broadband internet on many such flights since 2017.

A new addition is Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines offering unlimited complimentary messaging on internet-equipped flights. Passengers can send and receive unlimited messages on their devices for free during flights, provided they log in to FlyNet with a Miles & More service card number or a Lufthansa Group Travel ID registered email. For other internet packages, like the faster Premium access now starting at six euros, prices were nearly halved at the start of the year.

Access to Lufthansa Group Airlines apps and various services on the FlyNet portal of Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines, the Wings Connect portal of Eurowings, and soon the SWISS Connect portal, is free on all Airbus A220/A320 aircraft with broadband internet. Services vary by airline but include features like live flight tracking, connecting flight information, chat assistance for service inquiries, e-journal downloads, Worldshop browsing, and onboard menu viewing.

The onboard internet also aids crews in their daily tasks, including optimising flight routes, which helps reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
