In celebration of its 100th anniversary in November, Finnair has adorned two of its widebody Airbus A350 aircraft with the Moomin characters for rest of the year. The Moomin aircraft will fly to various long-haul destinations within Finnair's network, including Dallas, Tokyo, and Bangkok.
Finnair's CEO, Topi Manner, says that the Moomins' representation of friendship, community, and shared adventures aligns with the airline's values of enriching lives by bridging the world, which is also the theme of their centenary celebration. The collaboration between Finnair and Moomin has been ongoing since the 1990s.
Tove Jansson, a Finnish writer and illustrator, originally published a series of novels, short stories, and a comic strip featuring the Moomins in Finland. The Moomins, a family of white, round characters reminiscent of hippopotamuses due to their large snouts, are the central figures in these fairy-tale works. The Moomin brand is “founded on the universal and timeless values of acceptance, tolerance, and friendship”, which are integral to Nordic societies and are depicted in the Finnair 100 livery's Moomin embrace.
Additionally, Finnair has painted the centenary slogan, “Bringing us together since 1923”, on three other aircraft.
