SWISS is set to start a three-month trial to use artificial intelligence (AI) for passenger counting during the boarding process. The trial will begin on selected flights from Zurich between April and June. This digital transformation aims to bolster security and alleviate the workload for cabin crew.
A temporary camera will be installed in the cabin during boarding to record passengers and calculate their total number. The recordings will serve exclusively to train the AI system in boarding procedures - including distinguishing passengers carrying infants and how the system performs in various lighting conditions. The AI's reliability will be continuously assessed and improved throughout the trial. Due to the experimental nature of the approach, cabin crew will also perform a manual passenger count in parallel on the participating flights.
Passengers on the trial flights will be informed of the test prior to boarding. Once the trial concludes, SWISS will analyse the results and determine the next steps, including the potential full rollout of the technology.
