Japan has begun to lift most of its major pandemic restrictions for travellers and restore the visa waiver for visitors with three shots or a negative pre-arrival test result. Plans also include scrapping the daily arrival cap and allowing independent travel without needing guided tours through specific travel agents.
News of this is excellent for Japan’s tourism industry and a significant shift in Japan’s conservative border restrictions, which have seen only slight easing in recent months.
The suggested move comes as Japan feels the tightening effects of a weakening yen and hopes that a return to tourism will provide a much-needed boost to the economy.
Turkish Airlines has grasped this exciting opportunity with news that it will return to flights from Istanbul to Tokyo Narita airport from the 15th of December to supplement its daily operations to Tokyo Haneda airport.
The Star Alliance member will serve Tokyo Narita with three weekly flights on Boeing 787-9s, offering 30 fully-flat Business Class seats, hoping to take advantage of the increased demand for flights to Japan.
This will be the first time the national flag carrier will simultaneously serve passenger flights to Narita and Haneda. Turkish served Narita for many years before pandemic restrictions ended this service in March 2020, with Haneda becoming the sole destination from July that year.
