Airberlin will introduce 3G connectivity across its entire long-haul fleet.
The first aircraft to be equipped with the new service will be an Airbus A330-200 with the registration D-ABXC. Passengers will be able use 3G connectivity on all their mobile devices to send messages and surf the internet with the same quality as on the ground. Telephone calls will still not be allowed on Airberlin flights. Until now, connectivity has been limited to 2.5G on board aircraft, meaning the new 3G service will allow passengers to experience a faster on-board connection.
Passengers just turn on their smartphone or other mobile device, disable airplane mode and connect to the on-board 3G network. Fees vary depending on the passenger’s respective operator and are added to the users monthly invoice. The new 3G service is part of the airline's 'airberlin connect' internet service. Airberlin is the first German airline to not only offer access to the Internet on long-haul flights, but also on short and medium-haul flights. The service also gives passengers on Airberlin's short and medium-haul flights access to an entertainment menu featuring television series and movies, which can also be viewed on passengers’ own devices. Passengers can make a personal choice from more than a total of 180 hours of entertainment. On long-haul flights, passengers will continue to have access to the RAVE in-seat entertainment system.
