Finnair have chosen to follow in the footsteps of SAS, and this autumn will introduce their new service concept in economy class, which they have named ‘Sky Bistro’. This means that the snacks, which were previously being served on European flights over two hours, will be replaced with a café cart. There will be the also opportunity to pre-order food, including sandwiches, cold snacks and hot dishes. Sky Bistro is divided into nine different sections - Drinks, Salads, Meats, Pizza and Focaccia, Hot meals, Bagels and Wraps, Sandwiches, Snacks and Sweets, as well as a special section, which includes what Finnair have chosen to call "Survival Kit”, consisting of reindeer meat with salad, a beer and a miniature compass. Also available in this specialised section, is "Love is in the air", which includes a cheese platter and champagne. As an example of prices on board, a salad costs 8 euros (£6.50), a tapas platter costs 10 euros (£8), 8 euros (£6.50) for a pizza, a lasagna for 9 euros (£7.20), a bagel or wrap costs 8 euros (£6.50) and a sandwich 7 euros (£5.60). With regards to drinks, a beer costs 4 euros (£3.20), a bottle of wine 6 euros (£4.80) and a soft drink 3 euros (£2.40). Ordering is done online, via the Finnair website, where you can order anything from the fairly extensive menu. There will also be a smaller assortment available from the food cart on board, including a sandwich that will vary from week to week, among the nine others on offer. Complimentary coffee, tea, water and blueberry juice will continue to be served on all flights in economy class. Sky Bistro will be offered on virtually all flights within Europe, with the exception of some particularly short flights. The exact limit is not yet set, but will most likely be about 50-60 minutes, a time frame that is necessary to manage and administer the service.
