On Wednesday 8th October, at 1:10pm, the first ever flight with Lufthansa's new cabin class, Premium Economy, took flight. The product is between regular economy class and business class, with a price to match. BusinessClass.co.uk was on the maiden journey between Frankfurt and Washington, operated by a one month old Boeing 747-8i.
At Frankfurt airport, the whole project team gathered, along with product managers and Lufthansa's commercial director, Jens Bischof, to welcome all passengers onboard the inaugural flight. Jens Bischof actually became the first premium-economy passenger to board a Lufthansa aircraft, and was met with cheers and applause from those present at the gate as he boarded. Lufthansa’s premium economy consists of four rows in a 2-4-2 configuration, with eight seats in width compared to the ten found in economy class. Legroom is 38 inches compared to the 31-32 inches offered in economy class. The food is also an improvement and is served on real china. A proper review of the flight and the new concept will be available in a separate article.
