Gin is currently undergoing a renaissance across the UK and the rest of Europe.

Mother’s ruin, often considered the less sophisticated cousin of whisky or the less glamorous sister of vodka, is gaining popularity among the younger generations, especially in London. Londoners have a long history when it comes to their penchant for gin, evident in the Gin Act of 1736, which imposed a heavy tax on gin retailers in an attempt to curb consumption amongst Londoners, which had reached epidemic proportions during the ‘gin craze’ of the early 18th century. Londoner’s response was to riot - that’s how much they love gin. And now, a new boutique London hotel is hoping to capitalise on the resurgence of this juniper flavoured spirit. Located at 186 Portobello Road, the The Distillery is a gin-lovers heaven, with its four floors featuring a distillery, two bars, a museum, off-licence shop, gin-making experience at ‘The Ginstitute’, and three bespoke guest rooms overlooking Notting Hill’s famous Portobello Market.

The Distillery London On the ground floor, the ‘Resting Room’ offers an eclectic selection of international spirits that have been aged in hand-built barrels suspended above the bar from which they will be directly served. “Due to the spirit’s ongoing ageing process within the barrel, no two drinks will be the same,” a spokesperson for the hotel said. Downstairs is the distillery, where guests can take part in a gin-making experience at ‘The Ginstitute’. It also houses a museum showcasing the long history of gin. Make your way upstairs to the first floor and discover ‘GinTonica’, a Spanish-inspired bar and kitchen. https://www.instagram.com/p/BNR7DutjZaM/?taken-by=distilleryldn The hotel’s three guest rooms, each with a minibar (naturally) and record player, are located on the top floor, granting guests views overlooking the iconic Portobello Road street market. Also on the top floor, there is also a private dining room, The Boardroom, complete with its own bar.
