Heathrow yesterday released a number of mock-up images of what the airport would look like if they get the go-ahead for a third runway, an expansion currently being firmly opposed by Gatwick Airport who are themselves making a case for a second runway.

An impression of how part of the Central Terminal Area could look with expansion If the expansion is given governmental approval, a decision set to be made by the end of the year, a three-runway Heathrow will provide up to 740,000 flights a year. The improvement will also consist of two new main passenger terminals and transport hubs – Heathrow West (Terminals 5 and 6) and Heathrow East (an extended Terminal 2) – connected by an underground passenger transit and baggage system that will decrease minimum from 75 to 60 minutes.

Heathrow's Central Terminal Area Cargo facilities will be overhauled to improve and increase capacity. Plans include climate-controlled cargo environments, improved transit facilities and dedicated freight access points including a potential cargo railhead.

Plans include a new Terminal and an area set aside for a new business park Land will be set aside for commercial developments such as offices and hotels.

A new north-west runway (left) would be a full 3,200m long - that's long enough for any aircraft type to use A spokesman for the airport continued: “Our proposal compliments existing plans already in place to better connect Heathrow and the UK. This means that by the time a third runway is operational, new rail services to the north, east, south and west are due to be delivered. Find out more about the planned rail upgrades.”
