Sheremetyevo Airport Welcomes The World Cup To Moscow

Sheremetyevo International Airport in the Russian capital of Moscow has welcomed the FIFA World Cup to town with a celebratory presentation of the legendary trophy.

The airport, which is projected to receive two hundred planes bringing fans and players to the tournament, has also undergone numerous upgrade in preparation for the two-week event.

The ceremony was held in the new Terminal B, which was built just for the tournament. While two new business lounges have also been added to the airport recently.

The Kandinsky Business Lounge and Aeroflot Moscow Lounge, both designed by JPA Design are found in Terminal B and Terminal D, respectively.

The lavish lounges are open to business class fliers as well as members of various loyalty programs.

Other new features at Sheremetyevo include a new underground tunnels system for automated cable cars that take passengers between terminals.

Renovations at Sheremetyevo have expanded capacity at the airport by up to 20 million passengers, enabling the airport to handle a total of 46 million travellers annually. By 2026, Sheremetyevo is set to accommodate 80 million people through the construction of the new Terminal C.

FIFA legend and German World Cup Champion Lothar Matthäus commented, "The new modern Terminal B, built for the FIFA World Cup 2018, the hospitality and openness of the airport staff, and the enthusiasm of the volunteers inspire confidence that football players and fans will be served at Sheremetyevo Airport at a high level."
