Athens unveils a new Olympic Museum

With the starting-pistol about to fire on the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, a museum dedicated to the ultimate sporting event is due to open in Athens.

The Athens Olympic Museum is located in the heart of the Greek capital in the district of Marousi. In 1896, an Athenian water delivery boy and soldier – Spyridon Louis - won the marathon race Gold Medal in his home country’s summer Olympic Games. The museum is located a short distance from Athens’ 2004 Olympic Games stadium – which was named after Louis. 

The museum celebrates the Olympic movement in two parts. The first recounts the history of the Games from its inception in the 8th century – when it was held in the Greek city of Olympia – until the modern era including Tokyo 2020. The second part of the museum celebrates the values of the Olympics – including sportsmanship and the legacy of the Games itself. 

“We believe that it will support Greece’s contribution in the modern Games. The Athens Olympic Museum is an international museum that showcases the history of the Games highlighting the Hellenic Influence in the formation of the Olympic Movement. There is a special space dedicated to the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 and of course the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. It will be really worth a visit” said IOC member and Hellenic Olympic Committee President Spyros Capralos. He continued, “All the collections of the Athens Museum are new. There is a special area in the Museum dedicated to Olympia and the Olympic Games of  antiquity.

The 3,500 square metres museum boasts a stunning, contemporary design and will be a huge draw for Athens.
