Manila Travel Guide 2026

With a booming economy, a fast-growing food scene, and a creative wave of indigenous art and culture, Manila is considered one of Southeast Asia’s most dynamic urban destinations. The Philippine capital blends centuries-old heritage with luxury shopping, buzzing nightlife, a diverse dining scene, and modern urban experiences — all wrapped in the warm hospitality the country is famous for.

From wandering through centuries-old Spanish colonial streets to dining at highly regarded restaurants and shopping at luxury malls, Manila offers far more than most travellers expect.

Why Visit Manila?

Manila is chaotic, colourful, historic, energetic, and surprisingly diverse. It’s a city where colonial churches stand beside luxury skyscrapers, street food stalls share roads with designer boutiques, and centuries of history blend into a modern Southeast Asian metropolis.

Whether you’re visiting for culture, food, shopping, nightlife, or as a gateway to the Philippines’ islands, Manila deserves more than just a stopover.

Best Things to Do in Manila

Explore Intramuros: Manila’s Historic Walled City

No visit to Manila is complete without exploring Intramuros, the historic walled district established during Spanish colonial rule in the late 16th century. Known as the Walled City, it is a must-visit area for its colonial architecture, museums, and cultural landmarks.

Walk through cobbled streets lined with colonial-era architecture, ride a traditional calesa (horse-drawn carriage), and discover landmarks that shaped Philippine history.

Highlights inside Intramuros include:

  • Fort Santiago — a centuries-old citadel associated with Spanish, British, American, and Japanese rule in the Philippines.
  • San Agustin Church — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the district’s most important historic churches.
  • Manila Cathedral — a grand Roman Catholic cathedral famous for its stunning architecture and historical significance.
  • Casa Manila — a beautifully recreated Spanish colonial mansion showcasing aristocratic Filipino life during the colonial era.

You can also join a walking tour or other Intramuros tours, and a local guide can add valuable historical context along the way.

Intramuros is best explored early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid Manila’s intense midday heat.

Getting Around Manila

Transportation options in Manila include a mix of public transportation and private choices:

  • Ride-hailing apps
  • Taxis
  • Jeepneys
  • Buses
  • LRT (Light Rail Transit)
  • MRT (Metro Rail Transit)

Jeepneys are the city’s iconic cheap option for short distances, though they can be cramped and confusing for first-time visitors. The MRT is often the fastest way around, but it becomes very crowded during rush hour. Traffic in Metro Manila can be extremely heavy during peak commuting hours, so always allow extra travel time. For most travellers, Grab is the safest and most convenient choice, and it’s best to avoid regular taxis.

From Ninoy Aquino International Airport, getting into central Manila can take anywhere from 20 minutes to over an hour depending on traffic conditions, so plan your airport transfers and the last leg to your final destination from NAIA in advance, whether by official airport taxis or a prebooked car. On arrival, pick up a local SIM card at the airport or convenience stores, and use licensed money changers only—avoid anyone on the street offering unusually good rates. Stay alert in crowded areas and use secure bags to protect valuables, especially near stations, markets, and street vendors.

Hidden Gem

Quietly hidden in the midst of bustling commercial hub of Makati is a delightful art and design enclave – The Alley at Karrivin. Sports

The most popular sport in the Philippines, basketball is played extensively on both the amateur and professional levels. If you are a fan, head out to Araneta Coliseum, the indoor multi-purpose sports arena. Nicknamed "the Big Dome" for its clear span domes, which is one of the largest on the planet, it hosts basketball championship matches the year round, including the prestigious annual PBA Basketball Championship.

A bit surprising though, but tennis is one of the most popular sports in the Philippines and if you want to play a few good rounds, you are in a good spot. Facilities at the Makati Sports Club are open for non-member tourists who want to have a rally at their flexipave tennis courts with a prior booking.

For a taste of immersive local culture through the sports lens, watch Arnis, the centuries-old Philippine martial art that the indigenous population perfected and preserved through the generations. In 2009, the government of the Philippines declared Arnis (also known as Kali and Eskrima) to be the martial art and national sport of the Philippines. It is an electrifying experience to watch a full-combat competition, where the armoured players swing and twirl in lightning-fast movements and try to block and disarm their opponents with fighting sticks and bladed weaponry.
